Time Management Tips for the Unemployed

Time Management Tips for the UnemployedTime Management Tips for the UnemployedNow that you are unemployed, your calendar is very open. So, what do you now? This is something that I have personal experience with. For some, you are dealing with a swirl of emotions. For others, this is a relief. But you need a job, nevertheless. In my experience, you need a strategy for how to approach your days while unemployed.Lets admit this Sitting on the couch watching daytime television is not a strategy.Similarly, spending all day on the computer looking at LinkedIn, Indeed, and other job board sites can also be very counterproductive. What do you do? Here is a time management strategy I use while unemployedMy approach is to partition my day into 4 quadrants. Why do I do this?First, you need to treat job search as a full-time job. I have heard it before, A job search is a marketing job where you are selling a high valued product You.Therefore, you need to treat your job search as a full-time job. And you need to organize your day strategically in a similar fashion.Quadrant 1 The Job SearchI would spend about a quarter of my day working on my job search. This could involve the following tasksMaintaining my online presenceReviewing my resumeResearching a companyPracticing my vorstellungsgesprch skillsSharpening my branding effortsTalking to recruitersI continue to be amazed at the numerous resources available online. There are many good companies that can help me.But I cannot comfortably spend all day in front of my computer. I find this to be a form of solitary confinement and will become counterproductive.Quadrant 2 NetworkingI would devote about a quarter of the day to networking for a new job. This could be online, in-person, or picking up the phone. Now that I have the time, I intentionally try to connect with people whom I always meant to touch base with. I did not have time in the past while employed. In fact, with some of them, I seek advice and guidance on my next opportu nity. After all, if I dont let them know I need the help, how would they help me? Equally important, there are people in my network who are also in job search mode.I do what I can to offer them assistance, whether it be a mock interview or reviewing their resume. The job search can be frustrating. Why not be a source of encouragement and help someone?Quadrant 3 Personal growthAnother quarter of my day will be spent investing in my personal growth.I read books that I previously did not have time to read. In recent years, I have become fascinated with the interconnections between new product innovation, business strategy, and organization health. Some books I have read includePatterns of StrategyThe Drucker LecturesTeam of TeamsI have also taken online classes via outlets like LinkedIn Learning. After all, now that there is time, why not invest in ME and sharpen up my skills?Quadrant 4 Family timeThis may sound obvious, but it nevertheless deserves mention. Since my schedule is not bound to a 9 to 5 job, I intentionally pay more attention to my family. The flexibility of my schedule allows me to participate in the kids field day events, piano concerts, dance recitals, etc. These family memories are priceless. At the end of the dayJob searches can be very discouraging. But you can stay positive while unemployed. At the end of the day, a job search will take time. You need to make the best of it.As you network, invest in yourself and connect with your family and friends, you will be surprised at how it all helps your job search.

9 Musts for Finding a Job After 50

9 Musts for Finding a Job After 50 9 Musts for Finding a Job After 50 A common error many job seekers over 50 (and those who haven’t needed to job search in years, for that matter) make is thinking job searching hasn’t changed much. It has. Here’s what you need to know when job hunting after 50. 1. Self-Reflection Before embarking on a job search, evaluate what’s important to you. This way you know what is negotiable and what’s not when the opportunity (or offer) presents itself. For instance, do you want to stay local or are you open to a nationwide search? Does consulting or project work interest you? Are you open to travel and if so, how much? 2. Self-Assessment It is important to understand what you bring to the table that might be unique and valuable. Your response is what differentiates you from a sea of candidates. Are you skilled in building something from nothing? Are you repeatedly brought in to lead turnarounds? Do you have a history for coaching people promoted to positions of leadership? These are the kinds of things that should be called out front and center (or in this case at the top) of your resume and LinkedIn. 3. Make your Resume Timeless Your resume must read like a brochure, not a blueprint, that focuses on 21st-century experience versus an exhaustive list of everything you’ve done. Focus on your achievements and quantify your results whenever possible. 4. Examine Your Social Proof Recruiters and hiring managers will check you out online. Make sure that what they see is impressive by having a complete profile, a current headshot, and a summary section that tells the reader how you are ideally suited for your next role.  Make sure your LinkedIn’s headline includes keywords that a hiring manager might use to search for talent like you. 5. Money Matters Research salaries for the positions you’re seeking. Sites like Glassdoor and LinkedIn Salary can help to make sure your efforts are in the right ballpark. 6. It’s Often Who You Know By simple virtue of having been in the workforce for longer than your younger counterparts, your personal network is anywhere from 3 to 10X larger! Don’t let this invaluable asset go to waste â€" start reaching out and talking. Reach out by email, LinkedIn, and good old-fashioned phone calls. And even if it’s been awhile since you graduated, don’t underestimate the power of reaching out to alumni from your alma mater. 7. Be Interview Ready Beyond researching the company you are about to interview with and the people you will be facing, be sure to dust off your interview skills. This means being prepared for several different interview formats. Understanding the purpose behind each interview style, and having a plan in place, will give you your best shot at interview success. 8. Start Early It may take longer for you to land a job after 50. According to a 2015 Forbes article summarizing findings from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, it takes an average of 12 weeks longer for those ages 55-64 to land a role versus than those 25-34 (37 weeks v. 25 weeks). Those job seekers who get an early start, however, tend to be more successful in landing a new job than those who wait. While Baby Boomers and older Gen Xers testing the job search waters for the first time in years certainly face some unique challenges, they also have many advantages. In my experience, a candidate with a persuasive resume and LinkedIn, a robust networking strategy and sharp interview skills will edge out the competition time and time again. Learn How to De-Ice A Small Aircraft

Learn How to De-Ice A Small Aircraft Learn How to De-Ice A Small Aircraft Aircraft structural icing is very hazardous to airplanes. Even a small layer of frost can cause a significant change in the shape of the airfoil and a corresponding change in performance characteristics. De-icing your aircraft is often a necessary part of cold weather flying, and you should know how to do it right. Ice or frost on an airplane will increase drag and reduce lift, resulting in a longer takeoff roll, a higher stall  speed and a slower climb rate (if you get one at all). Aircraft can also experience instrument malfunctions, erroneous instrument readings or loss of power in icing conditions. The FAA and all major operators follow a “clean airplane” concept in which an airplane is prohibited from taking off with any ice or frost on the wings at all. While Part 91, which regulates general aviation operations, doesn’t specifically address icing for general aviation pilots, all pilots are required to conduct safe flight operations, and all pilots should avoid taking off in an aircraft with ice or frost on it. We often see business jets and airliners de-icing before takeoff, but what can pilots of light aircraft do if they notice icing on their airplanes during the preflight? Here are some options for aircraft de-icing on the ground: Prevent It Putting your airplane in the hangar will make your life much easier during the winter. Not everyone has access to a hangar, but if you do, make sure you utilize it. If you hangar your aircraft overnight before a morning flight, you’ll save a lot of time spraying your airplane down or waiting for a de-icing crew to show up, you’ll have a clean and dry airplane, and you’ll be a lot warmer.  If you cant or don’t want to budget for hangar rental fees, ask the FBO or hangar owner if you can pay a lower fee to hangar it just for a few hours prior to a flight. Brush It Off One of the only options that general aviation pilots have when it comes to snow and frost removal is to brush the snow off physically. Pilots should always use a soft-bristled brush made for aircraft. Other types of brushes will scratch the surface of the airplane. Hot Water Pouring warm water over the aircraft surface can melt frost. But be careful that the water doesnt refreeze. Use a towel to dry the water as you go. Use a De-Ice or Anti-Ice Fluid De-icing and anti-icing fluids can be costly, but there are a few inexpensive options, too.  Approved substances for de-icing aircraft include glycol (commonly in the form of propylene, ethylene and diethylene glycol), water, corrosion inhibitors, wetting agents, and dye, which is used to determine the type of fluid easily. The pilot’s aircraft flight manual should be consulted to determine what fluids are acceptable for use. While some fluids like rubbing alcohol and automobile windshield wiper fluid can work and are in use by many pilots, they’re not approved for use on aircraft, and you may risk damage to your airplane. Small aircraft should use Type I or III fluid, which is made for aircraft with a slower rotation speed.  Type I fluid is the most commonly used, has no minimum rotation speed restriction, and can provide about 45 minutes of ice protection on the ground when applied by a knowledgeable person. If a hand-held sprayer is used, the effective time is decreased. Type I fluid is orange. Type III fluid is meant for aircraft with a rotation speed of at least 60 knots. Type III fluid is yellow-green in color. Pilots should be sure they don’t spray de-icing fluid into any critical no-spray areas on the aircraft, such as inside of the engine inlet, on the windshield or in the pitot tube. A list of no-spray areas can be found in the aircraft flight manual. Heated air can be used for engine inlets and other iced-over areas if necessary. Winter can be a great time for flying, but if a hangar isn’t an option, make sure you to have some de-icing fluid on hand, and use it liberally. It’s a lot easier to get ice off your aircraft while it’s on the ground than in the air, and you’ll be able to relax knowing that your airplane will perform as usual during your flight.

Women and men are both bad at multitasking

Women and men are both bad at multitasking Women and men are both bad at multitasking There is a persistent stereotype that women are naturally better at juggling tasks than men. If you Google it, you will be directed to articles on how women are better at multitasking computer tests and doing multiple tasks on a treadmill. But it turns out, none of us are good at multitasking, a new study in Psychological Research argues, finding that men and women were equally bad at it.Busting the myth of anyone being better at multitaskingTo test how well we can handle serial multitasking, the researchers created a computerized simulation of the kind of meeting where nothing runs smoothly. The 66 women and 82 men recruited for this task were told to prepare a room for a meeting, and were given a long list of instructions of what to do for it: “Only put the required objects on the table; the moderator has to be placed in front of the video projection screen and requires a laptop computer; the assistant has to be placed next to the moderator; every guest requires a pencil, a notep ad, a name tag, and a chair- including the moderator; if the telephone rings or if someone asks you at the door, you have to answer; finally, when you feel that you have finished, please ensure that the cart is empty and that it is placed where you first found it, and then exit the room.”The participants were unable to get into an easy rhythm of coordinating work. They would get distractingly interrupted in their work by a phone call. When they needed to place a chair in the right location, a chair would be missing. To be good at multitasking, the participants needed to master timing by putting the coffee down at the table at the right time and remembering to change the drink of one of the participants. Ultimately, men and women showed no differences in  accuracy, the total time it took them to get the task done, in whether or not they forgot tasks, and other multitasking measures.“We found no differences between men and women in terms of serial multitasking abilities,” the re searchers wrote in Harvard Business Review. “We think it is fair to conclude that the evidence for the stereotype that women are better multitaskers is, so far, fairly weak.”If you have an intimidating to-do list on your calendar, try breaking it down one at a time over scrambling to do all of the things all at once. Multitasking may seem like a shortcut to getting work done, but it may end up backfiring on you, no matter who you are.

This is where confidence comes from

This is where confidence comes from This is where confidence comes from Earlier this year,  I was learning to rock climb. Or, more accurately, learning to “boulder,” since apparently there’s a distinction. It’s really quite a fascinating thing to try. You stare at a wall for a minute, look at the oddly-shaped colored pieces jutting out from it, and then attempt to climb to the top of it. I walked into the rock gym and saw chiseled, limber bros in man-buns?- ?the kind of men you see in Michelob Ultra commercials or under a string of Edison-bulb Christmas lights on a rooftop in Bushwick?- ?scaling walls seemingly upside-down like spider-monkeys in what felt like the blink of an eye. And I immediately tensed up and thought, “Shit. I’m gonna get laughed out of this joint. This is going to be just like that one day I did CrossFit.” But I was there, and I had someone with me to hold me accountable. When you “boulder,” (sorry, it’s a stupid verb and you know it,) there’s some thick padded mats below you, so, in the event of a slip, you won’t mangle yourself too hard on the landing. You  know  the mats are there for exactly this purpose, but, as you’re on your way up, fear starts to take hold and you start sweating the possibility of missing your mark and tumbling to your doom. As a way of mitigating this risk, I decided to embark on a bold and seemingly capricious strategy. After each successive rung I successfully surmounted, I would make it a point to fall. The cycle went sort of like this: Climb one rung. Fall. Get back up. Repeat, adding a rung, until I reached the top. To put it in systemic terms, I was intentionally creating  Single Points of Failure. Now, why would I do that? Why, if I could go higher, would I intentionally halt my own progress only to restart from the beginning? Because I wanted to know what it felt like to fall from the very top, and I wanted to learn that it wouldn’t hurt as badly as I had feared. Had I never fallen until I did so by mistake, at a time when I did not know what falling felt like, I would’ve been more fearful, more tense, and I ultimately would’ve progressed even more slowly, given up more quickly, or injured myself worse. How does this pertain to confidence? We’ll discuss that. But first, let’s discuss what confidence is  not. Many people have confidence backwards They believe confidence is a personality that, because it is endemic and one can apply it to anything one attempts, causes people to become more successful in general. Moreover, many believe confidence is a quality that?- ?heaven forbid you were not blessed enough to have been born with it?- ?you must practice or gain through a variety of eccentric activities like deep breathing, power poses, or repeated mantras. This is quite silly. You do not practice “confidence.” It is like practicing “love.” What many people mistake for confidence is often just a cocktail of adventurousness, optimism, and a zen-like calm. A sense of, “I’m going to do this thing because I want to, and what’s the worst that can happen?” That may be cool, courage, or bravado, and those (in metered doses) are still fine traits to have when venturing out into the world to try something new, but confidence comes from someplace else entirely. Still others believe confidence comes from success They believe that after you’ve worked at something long enough and gotten good enough at it, that confidence is the natural byproduct. This, while a touch more accurate, still doesn’t quite cut to the heart of it. Take, for example, a lengthy list of young stars who flamed out spectacularly because they never were able to move beyond the scourge of their own insecurities?- ?Michael Jackson, Amanda Bynes, Lindsey Lohan (though there’s word she’s getting better) and so on. Or, take Kanye West or our current sitting President, two egomaniacs who also happen to be obnoxiously good at what they do?- ?in Kanye’s case, being a musician; in our current sitting President’s case, being a well-branded monster- but they also feel the curious need to be validated at every point along their cacophonous journeys through life. But I want to, if I may, zoom in on baseball player Rick Ankiel. Rick Ankiel, in 2000 at age 20, was one of the top pitchers in the major leagues- unheard of in most pitchers’ first seasons. Deploying a scorching fastball and a beguiling curve well beyond his years, he finished in the Top 10 in ERA and strikeouts, helping the St. Louis Cardinals to a playoff appearance, and he looked to be set up for a prosperous, prestigious career. Injuries to the rest of the Cards’ starting pitching rotation forced him into the role of Game 1 starter in the National League Divisional Series?- ?a role typically given to the staff’s ace. This would be his first playoff appearance. In the third inning of that game, he suddenly lost command of his fastball, facing eight batters, and allowing four runs on two hits, four walks and five wild pitches. In his next start, Game Two of the National League Championship Series, Ankiel threw five wild pitches in the first inning before being removed. Then, in his next appearance, he threw two more wild pitches and walked two of the four batters he faced. The Cardinals lost the series, and Rick Ankiel was never the same. Injury and control problems plagued him for the rest of his pitching career. Was what Rick Ankiel suffered a “Crisis of Confidence?” Yes. (In baseball, they cutely refer to this as the “yips.”) But, it was not because he had lost his confidence, but, rather, because he had never really acquired it to begin with. What Ankiel gained as a result of sustained excellence and hard work from ages 0â€"20 up until the third inning of that game, was mastery. Mastery is the product of working at something long enough, hard enough and well enough to become so successful at it that it becomes habit. But Mastery is a fickle mistress. It’s only as enduring as, well  â€¦ your next pitch. So, what is confidence then? If it’s not a precursor for success, nor a product of it, then what is it? Let’s go back to that rock wall. After a while, I managed to make it all the way up the wall without falling?- ?exactly on schedule, exactly one run after falling all the way from the top. I had fallen as far as I could, and although I wouldn’t describe it as pleasant, it was easier than I’d expected, because I had already fallen so many times from not that much lower on the wall. From there, I was free to continue climbing up other routes on the wall, in the exact same manner as I had before. Before long, I had mastered most of the wall, and felt comfortable in my surroundings. It helped me grow stronger as a climber and as a person. That’s confidence. It isn’t entirely translatable to every area of my life, but more of it exists now than there did before I’d started falling.  Confidence is, in fact, a product of repetition  â€¦ but not a product of success?- ?it’s a product of failure. It’s knowing what the fall feels like and being familiar enough with it that you can be comfortable with the risk. This year, I’ve spent my days failing  at several things while growing incrementally more skillful at them: Speaking Spanish, fixing things on my car, asking women out on dates who I thought were previously way out of my league, and?- ?yes, even writing. All along the way, I learned what failure felt like, how I could prepare for it, how I could avoid it, and?- ?most importantly?- ?how I could  embrace  it as a learning tool. I may not have mastered all of these things, but I’ve gotten better and grown more confident. Indeed, this is basically the dictionary definition of confidence?- ?a state of  certainty  about your abilities, or about the truth of something. When we bake failure into incremental growth, we become familiar with it, and so we can develop certainty in our ability to overcome it. The key to confidence is to set ourselves up for failure not in a way that we’re surprised or defeated, but rather encouraged and comforted. People who seem confident because they’ve mastered a great many things are simply people who’ve failed incrementally forward at all of them. So, what we often call confidence isn’t confidence at all, and what we often call a lack of confidence can really be solved by just becoming more familiar with failure. As  I said earlier about Rick Ankiel, he was never the same. But that’s not quite the end of his story. In 2007, nearly seven years after his infamous playoff meltdown, Ankiel returned to the major leagues with the Cardinals after some time away from the game and some extensive rehabilitation in the minors. He did not return as a pitcher  â€¦ but, rather, as an outfielder. And this was what happened in his first game back: Quite the re-entry. From there, he would go on to spend a handful of productive years at the highest level of baseball, hitting 76 home runs and driving in 251 runs, becoming one of only three players in MLB history to start at least one full season as both a pitcher and a position player. The other two? Hall-of-Fame first-baseman George Sisler and some fella named Babe Ruth. Not bad company to keep. Perhaps that’s why we’re so bad at understanding where confidence comes from. It often masquerades itself as resilience. Perhaps that’s why successful entrepreneurs often preach the gospel of “fail early, fail often.” Confidence is something that can only come from repeatedly hitting the bottom, dusting yourself off, and climbing one level higher, until whatever heights you end up reaching just feel like the place you were supposed to be all along. Social Insects Inspire Design Autonomous Robots

Social Insects Inspire Design Autonomous Robots Social Insects Inspire Design Autonomous Robots Robots have overrun Hanover Fair, the worlds largest industrial exposition held annually in Germany. Exhibitors display hundreds of robotic arms, actuators, sensor systems, and feedback mechanisms. The growing presence of autonomous robots at Hanover reflects worldwide interest in robots that can clean house, fight wars, or serve as personal assistantsall by themselves. With autonomous robots, developers must wrestle with the most vexing of control questions: How can a robot be made intelligent enough to operate without direct guidance? That goal is very different from programming an automated control system in a factory, where every piece of equipment and every possible interaction is understood ahead of time. A truly autonomous robot must be able to interact with a constantly changingand therefore, unknownenvironment. Learning from Ants Once, theorists thought autonomous robots needed artificial intelligencethe ability to assess the environment and make informed judgments before acting. Today, developers feel that type of thinking is far too slow for real-time decision making. Instead, engineers are looking for clues in the behavior of social insects. When simple behaviors work together, they can create what appear to be complex, problem-solving behaviors, noted Bryan Adams. Adams is a principal investigator at iRobot in Bedford, MA, which developed Roomba, the worlds most widely owned commercial robotand one inspired by the behavior of ants. Consider how some species of ants find the shortest route to food. When a randomly foraging ant finds food, it grabs a piece and wanders back to the nest, leaving behind a trail of pheromones. The RoboCup is a soccer competition for autonomous robots. To win, robots must play as both individuals and team members.Other ants set out from the nest, following that pheromone trail to seek provisions. At first, they follow it readily because the scent is recent and strong. Farther away, though, pheromones have begun to evaporate, and the ants begin to wander from the trail. The ants that find the most direct route to the food and back leave the strongest scent, and their trail is the easiest to follow. At the highest level, this looks like rationaleven intelligentbehavior. Yet it derives from rudimentary instincts: walk randomly until you find food, bring the food back to the nest, follow the strongest scent back to food, and repeat. Such an approach guides Roomba, a disk on wheels that scurries around furniture and backs away from walls while randomly vacuuming rooms. Roombas instruction set looks something like: wander and vacuum, go left or right upon hitting an object, back up or spiral when caught in a corner, and find the docking station to recharge when low on power. Learning Smart Behavior Can robots actually learn behaviors with real intelligence? And can they do it with simple commands that enable them to function in the real world? Stefan Wrobel thinks so. Wrobel, director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems near Bonn, Germany, is active in RoboCup competitionssoccer matches played by robots. In robotics, Wrobel explained while scores of students put the finishing touches on their RoboCup contenders, behaviors are just the simplest building blocks. Robots that adapt to the environment go beyond manifesting behaviors: they learn while performing tasks. At the least complicated level, a robot could use simple behaviors to confirm its model of the environment. When searching for power, if there is no power source in the northwest corner, it could remember that, Wrobel said. On a more sophisticated level, a robot could assign priorities to its own behaviors, such as when to move or what to grab. According to Wrobel, designers give robots goals, and when the robot does something right, it receives a numerical credit as a reward. Teamwork Hanovers RoboCup matches have a long-term goal: to develop a team of robots capable of winning a soccer match against human opponents by 2050. Humanoid robots show themselves to be limited: they must stop before kicking the ball; they cannot pass effectively; few can lift themselves off the ground; they are also painfully slow. Wheeled robots, however, speed around the field, bumping the ball to one another and then finally bouncing it towards the goal. The robots can work together and still make rapid decisions because they are organized hierarchically. Robots have to react to different things as individual robots and as team players, said Sven Behnke, head of Bonns Autonomous Intelligent Systems Group. Each of Behnkes robots have four levels of control: the entire team, an individual robot, isolated body parts, and single joints. At the team level, the robots are focused on plans for the immediate future, while at the individual level, they react more to their environment. Simple and reactive are good, but consistent is even better. That begins with physical robustness. For every minute of RoboCup play, there are untold hours of preparation and recalibration. At tables around the playing field, scores of students are repairing, upgrading, or salvaging robots. Winning boils down to consistency, said Ericson Mar, who teaches robotics at Cooper Union in New York City. The robots that win are the ones that can do the task over and over again. Now that engineers have developed robots to the level of ants, can they lift robotic sophistication to the next evolutionary step? Many challenges lie ahead. [Adapted from From Simple Rules, Complex Behavior by Alan S. Brown, Associate Editor, Mechanical Engineering, July 2009.] When simple behaviors work together, they can create what appear to be complex, problem-solving behaviors.Bryan Adams, principal investigator, iRobot
